DPSH Testing

The Dynamic Probe Super Heavy (DPSH) test is a geotechnical investigation method used to determine the resistance of soils and soft rocks in situ. The test is a very economical and quick test to perform, resulting in an empirical indication of soil consistency with depths of up to 15m. A 60˚ disposable cone, 50 mm in diameter is fitted on the bottom of a steel rod with a 32 mm diameter. The cone is driven into the ground by a 63,5 kg hammer falling through 762 mm. The number of blows required to drive the cone each successive 300 mm of penetration is recorded and an indication of soil consistency with depth is achieved. This test provides continuous data on soil resistance, which helps in identifying soil stratigraphy and estimating soil strength.

Advantages

DPSH is particularly useful for determining the depth to a hard stratum and for profiling ground conditions, making it a valuable tool for preliminary site investigations.
